NIT Alumni: Where are they now? ...with Gustya Indriani, Class 04
Gustya Indriani, Class 04
Current place of residence: Jakarta, Indonesia
Currently working as: Independent consultant/expert on Climate Policy at various institutions, including Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and Climate Policy Initiative
Where are you currently working and what is the biggest issue that you are facing at work or what is currently keeping you busy there?
I have been working on topics of climate change, low carbon development, and climate finance. My assignments require me to identify opportunities of tackling climate change through various sectors, including renewable energy, and how to develop relevant policies as well as how to access its finance resources, both from public and non-public funds. My most recent works include carbon pricing and carbon tax topics, where since 2019 I have been a (part time) Senior Consultant/Senior Researcher/Expert to GIZ in supporting the Ministry of Finance. I have also been involved as Sustainable Finance Consultant to a GIZ study on Municipal Waste Management.
Has there been a professional challenge since you were a student for which your studies or experiences at the NIT have prepared you for perfectly?
Absolutely. My experience of exposure to multicultural NIT students helped me in working with colleagues from various backgrounds.
What has happened in your private life in the meantime?
I live in Jakarta with my husband and our twin daughters. During the pandemic, we have been taking care of more than forty stray cats in our compound and promoting stray cat welfare, such as street feeding, trap-neuter-return (TNR), vaccination, to our family and friends. By September 2022, at least seven cats visit our porch regularly, asking for daily portion of food and love 😊
What is your most precious / special / remarkable memory from your time studying at the NIT?
What a difficult question! So many precious things happened during my NIT years. I love my neighbors at the NIT student apartments, especially who shared the common kitchen with me (you know who you are 😊). Our activities were not limited in the kitchen only; we went also to enjoy events at Staatsoper Hamburg and Hamburg Tennis Open. Another memorable part of NIT is my Mentor (Dr. Christine Bauhofer), who introduced me to various cultural activities in Hamburg. Last but not least: I cherished the Hidden Shakespeare team; I had so much fun during the Improvised Theater class.
