Kumar Sourav, Class 17
Current place of residence: Hamburg
Currently working as: Group Leader Business Process Management at Nordex Energy
Where are you currently working and what is the biggest issue that you are facing at work or what is currently keeping you busy there?
I am currently working at Nordex within the department of operations excellence. The biggest issue – or I would not call it an issue, rather a challenge – would be incorporation of the latest technologies in our work. The workplace dynamics is changing at a rapid pace due to emerging technologies and as professionals we need to be in line with adapting the same at our workplace to improve efficiency. I continue to work on improving in professional aspects, be it technology wise or in operational aspects of work. The challenge, however, I feel still remains the very basic – communication. This is an underrated topic, and I believe most organizations falter and thus end up making silos. I feel this is an issue I tackle on a daily basis.
Has there been a professional challenge since you were a student for which your studies or experiences at the NIT have prepared you for perfectly?
I believe the NIT prepared me in many ways. I still take strength from the fact that I was studying two masters at the same time, was a working student, was taking care of my well being, and taking on the German bureaucracy ;). This helped me prepare for turbulence in life. Secondly, the studies that I did at the NIT still help me in my life when I look into topics of strategy or finance. Prof Bill Blake was my favorite and I cannot forget the case assignment he gave us. That really helped me in understanding what 'structure' really means. Apart from all this, the NIT gave me a host family and we are still going strong even after 9 years!
What has happened in your private life in the meantime?
I got married last year and my wife is a doctor so I get free medical advice from time to time. I was also in Ingolstadt for a short period of time with Audi, but then Hamburg called me back.
What is your most precious / special / remarkable memory from your time studying at the NIT?
I was awarded the DAAD prize in 2017. I still remember how the admin team and myself burst into laughter when Stephan Scheuner (former NIT staff) said that the cash prize can be awarded to me in the form of washing coins. Imagine the number of washing coins I would have to stack up!
